A 225 lb bench is 1.25 times bodyweight, which clears the Intermediate multiple of 1.0 and sits 45 lb below the Advanced multiple of 1.5. Notice how far apart the four lifts are at the same level: the same person is expected to deadlift twice what they bench, which is why comparing your bench against a friend's deadlift tells you nothing.

What these numbers actually are

They are bodyweight multiples, a coaching convention. Somebody decided, decades ago, that a bodyweight bench press is a reasonable marker of a few years of training, and the figure stuck because it is useful and easy to remember. It is not a measurement of anything.

Every strength-standards table you will find, including this one, is one of two things: a convention like this, or a summary of a lift-logging database. The second sounds more scientific and is arguably worse, because a logging database is not a sample of people — it is a sample of people who bought a barbell, downloaded an app, and cared enough to record a set. That group is far stronger than the general population and getting a percentile from it is not a percentile of anything you would recognise.

So the labels here are read as: Untrained, roughly what an active adult can do without training for it; Novice, a few months of consistent lifting; Intermediate, a couple of years; Advanced, many years of deliberate training; Elite, competitive.

Why the multiples differ so much between lifts

The deadlift standard is the highest and the overhead press the lowest, by a factor of nearly three. That is leverage and muscle mass, not effort. The deadlift moves the most weight over the shortest distance using the largest muscles in the body; the overhead press moves a load through the longest range using the smallest of the four muscle groups involved, with no help from the floor.

This is also why the press is the most honest of the four. It is very difficult to cheat with technique, so a press number is usually a real number, where a squat can be shortened and a deadlift can be pulled with a rounded back for an extra 20 lb.

Methodology

Ratio = one-rep max ÷ bodyweight, in whatever unit you entered. The ratio is compared against a table of five multiples per lift per sex, and you land in the highest band your ratio has reached. The thresholds shown are those multiples applied to the bodyweight you entered. Nothing is normalised for height, age, limb length or training history — a multiple is a multiple.

Limitations

These are not percentiles and this page does not claim they are. There is no representative dataset behind them. If a number here matters to you, it matters as a target to train towards, not as a statement about where you rank among human beings.

Bodyweight multiples systematically favour lighter lifters. A 60 kg lifter with a two-times-bodyweight squat and a 120 kg lifter with a two-times-bodyweight squat are not doing equivalent things, and the heavier one is lifting more than twice the absolute load. If you want a comparison that accounts for this properly, use the Wilks and DOTS calculator, which exists precisely because ratios do not scale.

Nothing here adjusts for age or for sex beyond the two coefficient sets, and there is no separate table for equipped lifting, different bar types, or partial ranges of motion. A squat to parallel and a quarter squat produce very different numbers against the same threshold.

If you are entering an estimated max rather than a tested one, remember that the estimate carries its own spread of 6 to 10% — which is wider than the gap between two adjacent bands on some lifts. Read the label as approximate, because it is.

This is a training reference, not medical advice. Chasing a threshold on a page is a common reason people attempt a single they are not ready for; the number is not going anywhere and neither is the standard.

Common questions

Are these strength standards accurate?

They are accurate arithmetic on a convention. The multiples themselves are a long-standing coaching heuristic, not a measurement of a population, and this page says so rather than dressing them up. Treat the band you land in as a rough label with a wide margin, not as a percentile.

How much should I be able to bench press?

There is no should. As a common reading of the convention: half your bodyweight is untrained, three-quarters is a few months in, your bodyweight is a genuine intermediate marker, one and a half times is advanced, and twice bodyweight is competitive territory for a man. Women's multiples run roughly half of those on the bench, which is a real difference in upper-body muscle mass, not a lower expectation.

Why is the deadlift standard so much higher than the bench?

Leverage and muscle mass. The deadlift moves a load a short distance using the largest muscles in the body with the floor helping; the bench press uses a much smaller muscle group over a longer effective range. A deadlift roughly twice the bench is the ordinary relationship, not a weak point.

Do these standards work for women?

There is a separate multiple set, yes, and it is applied when you switch the toggle. The gap is largest on the upper-body lifts and smallest on the deadlift, which is what you would expect from the distribution of muscle mass. The same caveat applies with equal force: convention, not percentile.

Should I use a tested max or an estimated one?

Either, as long as you know which. A tested single is a real number. An estimate from a rep set carries a spread of roughly 6% at five reps and 10% at ten — sometimes wider than the gap between two bands here. If you are using an estimate, use the one-rep max calculator and read the range it gives you, not just the median.

Why does a lighter lifter reach a higher multiple?

Because strength does not scale linearly with bodyweight — it scales closer to bodyweight to the two-thirds power. Multiples ignore that, so they flatter lighter lifters and understate heavier ones.
